Will brown be the next fancy color?

It is always a pleasure to detect new trends in web design along the random walk of your daily browsing or, if you’re busier, with the help of “institutional” trend finders (or creators) such as SmashingMagazine or DesignMeltdown. One of the classic trend (and debate) is about “dark background designs” as opposed to “white background designs”; although “dark background designs” usually refers to black-based designs, it seems we should seriously consider another color: brown. For a few months I’ve seen a few major blogs being redesigned, all based on some kind of brown backgrounds (see redesigned screenshots first, as compared to previous designs).

JeffCroft.com

OrderedList.com

MattBrett.com

AvalonStar.com (not completely brown, but still a little bit)

Brown is not that usual in web design, but the color has been in use for a few years on a few websites (see DesignMeltdown’s little chapter about brown websites). The point here is that all these 4 websites have recently been redesigned in brown as they were previously dressed with very different color schemes (black, white, pink). Is this the starting point of a new trend?

Do you know other famous blogs who recently switched to a brown-based layout?

Well I wouldn’t exactly say famous, but we just did a redesign that launched yesterday based around a brown and blue color scheme my wife used a few years ago on a pixel art website she had. It was weird to see this post right after that. Maybe it is a trend…

Well, I think it’s just a trend, like the big, bold, glossy logos and “beta” marks of the very first “Web 2.0″ era.

I personally like a lot this trend, finally some extravagant color combinations will be possible :)

It will pass, anyway, like every other web-fashion

The grunge or vintage old look is quite “in” right now. I’ve stumbled upon many sites that has a brown color. Even, my site is brown. Lol…
